Proper Long Term Water Storage

If you are not purchasing water with a long shelf life, then here is the best way to store water. Look for plastic containers with the recycling triangle symbol containing the number 1 on the bottom of bottles. The best ones to check are soft drink containers. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as glass bottles, or plastic milk jugs.

Wash out the bottles with soap and warm water. Then fill them with water from your tap, or water filter. Store in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight. Normally an active person needs to drink about 2 quarts of water a day. Hot environments and intense physical activity may double that requirement. Individuals that are ill, nursing mothers, and children will also need more.

Be sure to replace you emergency water at least once every 6 months, as water does expire, believe it or not! Keep at a minimum of a 3 day supply of water for each person in the household. It is also recommended to add 2 quarts for food preparation, and sanitation daily for each individual.
